Microsoft Unleashes 9 Security Bulletins for August
It is the second Tuesday in August, and that means its time to break out the noise makers and party hats and pop open a bottle of champagne- its PATCH TUESDAY BABY!! Microsoft did not show up to this month’s party empty-handed either. There are a total of 9 new Security Bulletins for August including 5 rated as Critical and 4 Important.
The Critical Security Bulletins apply to flaws in Microsoft Office web components, Remote Desktop, WINS, media file processing, and the Active Template Library. As per usual, one common thread that binds the Critical Security Bulletins is that a successful exploit of the underlying vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute malicious code remotely on the target system. In other words, left unpatched these vulnerabilities could potentially allow an attacker to take over your computer.
You know the drill. If you are a home user you should probably have Automatic Updates turned on in which case the appropriate patches will be downloaded and/or applied to your system on whatever schedule you have configured for Automatic Updates. Make sure you take a look at this month’s Security Bulletins to understand the issues and risks associated with these vulnerabilities. Use Windows Update to make sure you have any necessary updates installed and keep your computer protected.
