My Two Cents on the Portwell UTM Appliance
Portwell has an appliance which incorporates various security functions. Portwell does not sell directly to consumers, but other organizations can buy their appliance, customize it, and rebrand it. In a recent article in Processor Magazine, I was quoted on the subject of all-in-one appliances for the SMB market: “There is an age-old debate about whether it is better to implement standalone, best-of-breed solutions or to implement a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none all-in-one appliance. Over time, many of the security functions have become commoditized, and it is harder to even define ‘best of breed.’ With the security and network infrastructure market today, all-in-one or multifunction appliances make sense on a number of levels, especially for small and medium organizations.”
